Being Trendy vs Self Expression

A trend is a general tendency or course of events (a warming trend). Examples of which includes following  current styles that are in vogue (It is the latest trend in fashion).

It is the general direction of something. When something is trending is something which shows a general tendency; i.e The magazine’s circulation is trending downward”. It’s when a people’s worldview undergoes a rapid increase in public interest or attention that tends to extend, incline, or veer in a specified direction. There are two very strong desires that motivates the hueman and that is the desire to be liked and the desire to do great things. These two desires are what drives civilizations, high cultures and social growth over many millennium. Due to ignorance and arrested development, we tend to confuse and cross the two desires, in such a way that people confuse the desire to do great things as a pursuit for likes, and the pursuit for likes as an achievement of great things. People into trending, confuses doing great things as a means to acquire power over things and people. While also confusing  having power over others as a way to engender likes. Both states tends to give a sense of accomplishment, which is misunderstood and misplaced, to the point where we end up “hurting the ones we love” and we do great things just so people can like us.

Aiming for dirt

The analogy, that teaches us to aim for the stars and in failing to hit the stars, miss and hit the clouds..or the top of the trees…has substances of overstanding for people who strives to aim for a high standard in life. Consequently aiming for a lower standard…the branch… earns one a hit on the trunks, if the branches are missed. It is the same principle as before, with a lower expectation and a lowering of the bar. Today, we neither aim for the stars or the top of the trees. Or even the branch, for that matter. Today in most societies, people aim for the dirt. Aiming for the dirt, earns one a comfort level, where effort is minimal and achievement is non existent. There seems to be this belief that if you aim for the dirt, you will hit it 100 percent of the time, while not fearing a risk of failure, criticism or disappointment.

Enter the way of the trends. When something is trendy, is when something is designed to appear over reaching and above the dirt. When your arrow is aimed around the root of the tree, just above the dirt, it appears unique and is something to celebrate. Such is the way when standards are low or even non existent. Thus trending for likes is evident on social media, where social media is life and genuine life is moth balled and regulated to a displeasing and unappealing aspect of existence. The confusing of achievement and likes is at the intersection of social trending, where souls are lost and intelligence is dumbed down.

Overstand that this is not an originally organic thing. To entirely over look the real world for a digital and fairy tale one. This phenomena creates generations of automatons which are predictive and produced by sinister mechanisms which created the notion of trending as a form of population and mind control.

An example of aiming for dirt…and i only use it here, because i was speaking on it last night with my friend, is how we like to celebrate and throw out the name of Mansa Musa as the richest man in the world. Black people throw that out without rhyme or context and in the next breath we hear crickets. The trend in this case is how our low self esteem makes us clutch at something unsubstantial as a self esteem builder. In pulling back to see the big picture, what i see is Ghana, Mali, and Songhai were just three of the greatest western African trading states. Beginning with Ghana as early as 300 c.e. and ending with the conquest of the Songhai by the Arabs of Morocco in the 16th century c.e., they dominated the trade of gold, salt, and merchandise between North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. Arab scholars and merchants as far away as Baghdad marveled at the wealth of these African states.

Why Mansa Musa was touted as unique above the other rulers of Ghana, Mali and Songhai, was due to his epic visit to the barbarians in Mecca, tossing gold around like a patron in a strip club. The barbarians not use to this wealth and extravagance entered this occasion as one of the greatest event a MUSLIM could ever do. The key word is Muslim, but not just any Muslim, but a Afrikan Muslim who also happened to be one of the first big time kneegrows that was flossing and blinging.

Keep in mind that the Arabs had been trying to penetrate into the interior of the Blackest Afrika, from before Europe learned to bathe. And it was only around 1200 AD, they finally figured out how to do it by converting lames like Mansa Musa into Islam, thus getting an insight and an inroad into the Afrikan interior. The wealth that Mansa Musa had was more the product of the line of rulers and the wealth of the nation he ruled than actual personal wealth by itself. Nothing comes out of a void. At least below the heavens. And the soil of Ghana, like the soil of many other Afrikan countries, even till today, has always been one of mineral wealth. Yet nothing is ever mentioned about other rulers in Ghana or any of the other kingdoms, because they never flossed like him, nor did they care to do so. Thus due to limited access and overstanding, by the Arabs for the area once called the GOLD COAST, he is praised as  the richest man on the planet. Afrikan kings before the infection of Islam, never ruled autocratically, but by the will of the society they rule.

Black people aim for the dirt in praising Mansa Musa’s journey to Mecca and the giving away of gold, as evidence of what is important. The example of greatness achieved. An example of how one can achieve “likes”, through doing great things. We become enamored by his story and fail to overstand that jewelery worn in ancient times, carried less praises and worship than they do today. Trend followers work from the outside in, instead of from the inside out. They do things for likes instead of liking to do things, for themselves and for their own personal growth.

Cutting straight to the heart

To be self expressive in the most natural of ways is to adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own. Those who practice self-expressiveness overstand that, they are not in this world to live up to anybody else’s expectations and everybody else is not in this world to live up to theres. Therefore putting limits on personal self expression by placing trending limits on everything you do, physical or otherwise, will spread into your work and into your life. Overstand that there are no limits to your growth. There are only plateaus, and you must never stay standing on the ground.  Standing on the ground aiming your arrow into the dirt affords you nothing but stagnation. You must go beyond the dirt, the trunk, the branches and aim higher than naysayers warn against.

And while aiming for the stars the bold and honest won’t fear failure. For it is not failure, but low aim, which is the crime. Throughout ourstory and his story the reward and fortune always favor the bold. These people overstand that in great attempts it is glorious even to fail. When one is honest with ones self and honest with your purpose. When one seeks to achieve great things honestly and not for power, one overstand that aiming for the stars is the truest expression of self. It is a goal is not always meant to be reached, it often serves simply as something to aim at. Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it. Do not go out and look for a popular trend to follow.

“Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves….Bruce Lee!

To quote an old adage of Buddhism….“Empty your cup so that it may be filled; become devoid to gain totality.” A greater mistake than to anticipate the outcome of the engagement, is to not put in any effort in an engagement. Such a state is due to fear of the results and the toil it takes to enter into that engagement. One ought not to be thinking of whether it ends in victory or defeat, but let nature take its course, and your purest efforts and desires will shine at the right moment.

Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do. The key to immortality is first living a life worth remembering. Being a trend setter is infinitely more rewarding than being a trend follower. And the trend that last through the ages are the ones that are not subject to “likes” in order to feel important. The trend that carries substance are the ones that allows us to achieve great things that benefits and not harm. That is being powerful without using use power to achieve likes.

Such is the way of overstanding the difference between being trendy vs practicing authentic self expression.

….”and, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” ...The King of Salem to Santiago (from the Alchemist)

  1. I like that first video! It’s pretty good. I think trying to find our authentic self is the hardest thing for many people. It’s really hard for our people because we are given so many false images of what it means to be black.
